How can you criticise my comedy, when you don't even write comedy yourself?

That's what people keep saying.
I think this is ridiculous. A criticism is an idea whose validity (or otherwise) is something quite separate from the credibility of person who suggested it. Imagine that someone whose work you respect made the same criticism. Now answer the criticism. Saying “why should I listen to a squirt like YOU?” is not really much of an answer.
(Note: Richard Herring of TV's “Moon Up A Stick” fame has admirably avoided the above tactic and has given very open responses.)

The Corpses may not write comedy but, most of the time, they understand what comedy is, which is surely much more important. Just because someone writes sitcom, this doesn't mean they understand what comedy actually is, and what makes something funny or not.

I agree with Peter O (the "How can you ..." argument is also known as the ad hominem fallacy, logic fans).
But the fact is, The Corpses *are* good enough writers to do their own comedy. The HIGNFY transcript proves this - notice also the fantastic ideas they come up with in the Jam review e.g. Morris interrupting Drop the Dead Donkey halfway through.
Maybe they should take the plunge.

But the point isn't "How can you criticise..?" but "Why don't you do better?"

SOME of the corpses might be. Not all of them. I'm not, for example.

You're forgetting they might have other important day jobs consuming their time. They may be shepherds for all we know.
