Doesn't Jacques Peretti do the club article in the Guardian on Saturdays?

'The trip' began in late 1998/early 99 and started off back to back with 'The Clangers' for some confused kitsch appeal.

The soundtrack is the main reason it works, and a CD came out last year. The show regularly features the best post-rock, experimental electronica people, such as V/VM, 'Gwai and Third Eye Foundation.

Nothing else to say other than a great show.

He does Guardian club and TV reviews regularly. I had no idea he'd been on TV. Interestingly, his club column is unremittingly unfunny (I think he's trying for funny) but his TV reviews are good.

Does this imply that Peretti has finally had some function?

Hackenbush is right - his column is badly researched and appalingly poorly delivered. He occasionally gets to do a front cover article on some media topic or other for the Guide too and always ends up repeating whatever Seaman Staines-style rumours he's overheard in some grisly Hoxton wine bar...

His clubbing column always reminds of someone recalling their dreams or drug experiences - really tedious if you weren't there.

Mind you, clubbing is inherently a tedious activity anyway. That's why all this "Dog's Balearics" shit is doomed to failure. Actually "dancing" to that "music" and taking those "drugs" is boring enough, let alone watching a load of gurning morons do it.

Rock bore alert! Rock bore alert!

Do I see the words 'real instruments' hoving into view???

No, he's right, "club culture" is the most mind numbingly tedious load of shit CD-compilations-with-tits-on bollocks ever.

Loathe as I am to plumb the depths of popular music discussion on a TV forum I'd have to disagree. Judging all of electronica, house, garage, drum n' bass etc on the strength of a crappy C4 series and cheap cash in compilations is like saying all guitar based music is no good because of Bon Jovi. Dance music has produced some of the most interesting and challenging innovations in poipular music over the past 25 years. The current state of supposed 'alternative' rock only seems to bear this out. Stereophonics anyone?

Did I really say 'poipular'? Oh dear, I did.
'Popular' music.

Would you include, say, Orbital in "club culture" then?

Perhaps we are talking at cross purposes Peter O'. I would include Orbital I guess. But I imagine by 'Club Culture' you mean all this 'Oy Oy Saveloy!'/Dave Pearce nonsense - and if you do I'm with you all the way. I interpreted Dr H's comments (and I must confess yours) as being anti-dance/club music in general. And that would never do....

I haven't heard much "ambient" music or whatever, so I can't comment on people like Orbital. But I find mainstream dance music (or "UK shed" or whatever we have to call it) mindless and repetitive and a reflection of the vapid club culture which creates it.
Not that I'm a rock bore with a "proper instruments" fetish, though. I enjoy some rap. There's nothing wrong with electronic music as long as they don't find some lazy, obvious sample and then repeat it over and over again to the theme of Casualty. For example.

Oh, I agree that the current fad for flaccid guitar bands is pretty annoying.

Ah but for me it is the repetition that makes it good. Ah. Do you see?
Kidding. Not keen on a lot of UK Garage - the new MJ Cole single is pretty boss tho' - but on the whole I don't think club culture is totally vapid. A lot of dance mags make much more interesting reading than their indie equivalents, and although current 'club' stuff is a bit too RnB related for my tastes it has been diverse and massively influential in the past. My clubbing days are probably over now but for a while (1992-1995 mostly) it was all very exciting - I wouldn't have missed it for the world!
