CARLTON TO BID FOR SMG Posted Tue Aug 1 08:12:46 BST 2000 by RB

Sunday Business reported that Michael Green was preparing a bid (hostile if need be) for Scottish Media Group.
I've heard nothing since then.
Could it be true?

They would have to sell a couple of the franchises, like Granada have to sell HTV due to the rules of the 1996 Broadcasting Act. It wouldn't be worth it. I don't think much will happen until the 2003 Broadcasting Act is put forward, relaxing the rules on how many franchies a company can own.

Granada has a stake in SMG -- so it wouldnt bother them - for carlton to have to resort to buying SMG means things a looking bad
