SKY NEWS COULD REPLACE ITN ON ITV Posted Mon Jul 31 21:24:20 BST 2000 by Whataday

Sky News have applied to the ITC for a license to become the new news broadcaster of ITV when ITN's licence runs out in 2002.

Good idea or bad idea?

On 'NewsBreak'on Sky One, can anyone hear what the news reader is saying, or is the background noise too loud?

It's a terrible idea. remember when Sky did TV-AM's news? Oh, I hope it doesn't happen.

If the News department are anything like the Entertainment department - currently commissioning new shows from external production companies - we would have a lot to fear from a Sky News service on ITV.

Basically, people at Sky haven't a creative bone in their bodies. They're all schedulers at heart, with great gifts for lack of communication and goal-post shifting.

They'll hack a good idea to pieces in order to suit a slot or a perceived audience profile. They might start with a brief for a nightly news service, but by the time it reaches the air it would have mutated into "Bob Friend Headlines with... Posh & Beckham"

If you think ITV News is 'dumbed down' now, just wait and see what Sky would do with the slot...

But with ITN getting there own 24/7 news channel it does seem quite likely...

Sky could but they won't.

They have bid for every ITV/C4/C5 license since they started with no success (due to the quality threshold?) They only got TV-AM's because it was run by a madman (that'll be Gyngell then).

Sky is becoming more serious and with its new interactive capabilites, and this may be a way for ITV to conceed defeat and broadcast on DSAT.
This is a very serious threat to ITN, make no mistake.

Apparently some big cheese at ITV said that ITV channels would appear on DSat - it was only a matter of when.

I don't think so. Don't forget the Granada, Carlton and a few others have a stake in ITN. Aside from that, I think the respective qualities of ITN and Sky News over the years make the decision easy. Sky could almost certainly outbid ITN, but I don't think even ITV would go so low as to take Sky's news.

All the ITV companies have some stake in ITN. They'd like ITN to keep the franchise but as with all franchises it's up to the ITC to decide who gets it.

Is that still true? They used to all own a chunk, I know. But things have changed post-mergers/takeovers etc. In fact, I think they changed before that.

From the ITN Website:

ITN began life in 1955 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the ITV companies which made up Britain's first commercial television network. So, from the very beginning, it understood the dynamic of commercial television.

ITN's assets are the commitment of its staff; the strength of its shareholders (Carlton Communications, Daily Mail and General Trust, Granada, Reuters and United News & Media); its partnerships with other media organisations; its past heritage and forward innovative technological vision.

I concur. For breaking news, Sky is definitely the best.

Its programmes certainly look better than N24's. But its distracting "still to come" and explanation captions really annoy me.

MM appear to have posted twice sorry about that -
I think that Sky is so much better than the service that the BBC provides and also ITN - they always seem to be able to break news faster than N24 or ITN - two much larger news services, while im on the subject - how many correspondants does Sky have - i know BBC has the most followed by CNN but how many in comparison ? Because it uses the to a much better extent.
also talking of Sky I have only once seen a Sky One NewsBREAK - and i wasnt watching - what the hell are they and when do they happen?? Is it like a news reports- and finally If I lived in Wales, (and i very nearly do) would I get BBC one Wales on Sky digital and S4C instead of channel 4? because it suggests that in wales s4c is put on channel 104?
Im confused about this - anyone help me out here?

U would get BBC Wales and you would get S4C on the channel number for channel 4, and Channel 4 on the number for S4C.

You would get BBC ONE Wales, but not BBC TWO Wales. Also, BBC CHOICE Wales would appear on CH160 with BBC CHOICE appearing with BBC CHOICE Scotland and BBC CHOICE Northern Ireland on Nine Hundred and something.

You would get S4C Digidol on position 4 and you would get Channel for on 184 - the reverse of the situation in the rest of the UK. S4C Digidol would also be automatically enabled instead of you having to ring S4C to get it (for free) as is the case outside Wales.
