ON THE HOUR Posted Sat Jul 29 17:40:06 BST 2000 by SOTCAA

We want a proper CD/cassette release of On The Hour, comprising (unavoidable PRS snips aside) all the original, unedited shows in sequence. Richard Herring reckons it won't be released now because it's been too long after the initial transmissions to be marketable without being old enough to be regarded as a 'classic'.

But imagine it - a serious affair in the vein of the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy release. Two boxed sets of three CDs - 'First Report', 'Second Report', whatever. It would do two things: (a) it would make thousands of On The Hour/Chris Morris/Lee and Herring fans very happy, and (b) it would show everyone that BBC Worldwide aren't idiots.

So we need you guys to do a few things here. Firstly, we need to know - from any parties involved in the show who read this forum - whether such a release coukd be arranged tomorrow if the world wanted it. In other words, do all the tedious Avalon/Iannucci 'legal matters' which dogged the original release (see EDIT NEWS) still apply after all these years? The mooted second BBC Radio Collection volume from 1996 was presumably halted for these reasons...but now?

Secondly, we need a bit of direct feedback from On The Hour fans. Fill this thread with your comments and wishes concerning the release. Once it's suitably brimming with positivity, we'll mail it to BBC Worldwide, to Morris, to Iannucci, to everyone involved in the show, and see if we can't get the thing released once and for all.

Even if we can't affect their judgement then at least we will know exactly where we stand with regard to the BBC's position on e-mailed comments.

Mail away.

.. which you'd have nailed to your head.

Yes yes yes. See my comment in "Lee & Herring.. hmm.."

Or just read this bit of it:

>It's got to be nearly ten years since the
>first (and last) time I heard Rosie May
>talking about "old womens' pants." I need
>to hear her again.

Tonight's edition of On The Hour has been cancelled. In its place is the one that would have gone out instead.

The Hitch-Hikers analogy made by SOTCAA was apt - for me, On The Hour was the best radio comedy of the 1990s. Most of it has aged remarkably well, yet it has never been repeated in full, and not in any form since a compilation series, broadcast at Christmas 1992. If a repeat run is not possible, surely it is time for a complete commercial release (6xCD set). I can safely say there would be no shortage of buyers. After all, what other radio show of recent years has parodied such a wide range of broadcasting techniques, or inspired so many copycat shows (some reasonably good, some poor, but none as impressive)? It would be near-scandalous if no-one ever got to hear Barton's Matches, Thank God It's SatireDay, that Kinnockgate call to The Sun, or all those Audio Pull-outs. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you need to hear the Uncut On The Hour.

I heard and loved every single edition of "On The Hour", and would jump at the chance to hear it all again, but did not have the foresight or the facilities to record any of it. So why am I being penalised for this?

I have nothing original, witty or useful to add (no change there) simply - YES I would like to buy the complete On The Hour. Has the Knowing Knowing Me Knowing You spoof docu been released? That'd be nice too. What about some of Morris' GLR stuff - do the BBC own this material?

I can't claim to be a fan of OTH, but that is only because I've never heard any of the episodes. A cd/cassette release would help enlighten naive fools such as myself who weren't aware of its existance when it was first broadcast. I'm sure there are plenty of us (well there's me, anyway).
I would guess that Jam, and Brass Eye (which I was also too young & stupid to watch.); and FOF & TMWRNJ will have gained Chris Morris and Lee & Herring new fans who would be more than interested to have an opportunity to hear their earlier work. In fact whilst we're on the subject, how about a re-release of the FOF audio cassettes, or some video releases. Or is that too much to hope for.
Anyway, they're my opinions. Not sure how much sense that all made, but I'm tired, ok?
Thank you for listening (reading...whatever). Byeee!

Hmmmm, yes. Probably should have checked with some of the threads further down before I bothered with that one. Sorry.

Chris Morris's GLR/Music Shows would be impractical, given that they're awash with music and general fiddling with samples. Look at the problems Warp Records had with 'Blue Jam', even though half of the records were on their label. I'd love the "We aint got no fucking idea" audience survey on CD, but it's not likely, is it?

If OTH does get a full release, accepting that music may be swapped around, then is there any chance of the announcers links. As in the REAL announcer on Radio 4. Similar pre-written intros for 'Why Bother?' got cut, but is it that expensive to pay off in house staff for it's use? Brian Perkins or whoever.

The BBC are notorious for not recognising the quality of the stuff that is produced under their noses and instead hyping the dross (is there a "Keeping Up Appearances" gift box-set yet? There fucking will be). It usually takes a good twenty years for any of these stuffed suits (or skirts) to realise that maybe there's a demand for a given series, often as not because their own kids heard a repeat and raved about it. On the evidence of the Goon Show we're going to have to wait an average of fifty years before complete series start getting released. I'm particularly looking forward to the 2040 commemorative Mary Whitehouse Experience DVD. Given that the BBC is such a large organisation, it's astonishing that no-one there appears to be able to sort this out.

Of bloody course On The Hour should get a full release, but I honestly think we're on a hiding to nothing here. Still, if contributing a friendly (ha!) e-mail to this thread might influence (ha! again) some humourless exec's decision on the matter, then I've done my bit.

No - there are only eight episodes out of the full twelve (thirteen if you count 'Newsbanger'), and I think some *might* be from the slightly trimmed repeats mentioned in Edit News.

There were some rumblings about releasing a 10th anniversary special cassette of all of On the Hour a couple of months ago.
I certainly have no objections to them doing this. Armando's manager was in conversations with my manager who told him to get the BBC to ring him about it.
So far they haven't. So I think they're the people to put pressure on. I'm sure it would be easy to work something out.

Rich, we brought this up a while back when a Corpse spotted 'On The Hour Second Report' in pre release lists. It had been trailed for a few months then disappeared off the schedules. Would this ring any bells?

I only heard about it in the last month. I wouldn't have thought it was second report - that name suggest something new.
But the eerie silence that has followed does not look promising
