Everyone is in total agreeance (spelling?) with you - even the local programming quality has been moving ever closer to generic, network productions a la Waterworld, Home in the country, fly on the wall documentaries etc. Just where is the 'local' programming?? I haven't seen much since the diluting of these two companies to Carlton!!!

Do we really need local programming? A wise man once said 'local' is just a synonym for 'crap'.
would this 'wise man' happen to be you? :)
MIDLANDS TODAY IS GREAT
EVEN NICK OWEN'S FUNNY !!!!!!
No it's not. It's piss. As is most local TV, coz they have 30 mins to talk about nothing.
And keep your eye on Nick Owen as the other presenter speaks. You can see him longing for the days of Sporting Triangles.
The only reason much local television is crap is because no effort is put into it. Stations like Carlton see it as a necessary evil to appease the regulators. It was oh so different when the ITV companies were separate. In the US local TV is the most watched programming around, beating Friends, Frasier, X-Files, Letterman......
Smaller stations like Tyne Tees, Border, HTV etc take their local output much more seriously because it's their life, like it should be. In many cases it's all they do. So go to those regions. You'll find a very different situation.

Only because it's too far to get the remote, or people can'ty afford the cable upgrade to anything but the 'local' channels you get through the arial. you're comparing appleas and oranges, I'm afraid.
Well OK then, Borders Lookaround is the most watched programme in it's region, beating Coronation Street even. Apples now?
All right... Only if they're not Golden Delicious, though.
>Well OK then, Borders Lookaround is the most watched programme in it's region, beating Coronation Street even. Apples now?
Never true, I am afraid. It does (or did) have the highest reach in its timeslot (at more than 50 per cent) and often made the top ten for the region, but never No1.
What's this about apples?
Here are some of the great regional programmes that HTV Wales makes:
1. Nuts & Bolts was so good, they have decided to put it on ITV2. This is a welsh soap.
2. The Ferret is brilliant. It's a cross between Watchdog and The Cook Report. It's presented usually out on location and the best bits are when the presenters confront the owners of bad businesses.
3. Barry Welsh Is Coming is now also shown on the Paramount Comedy Channel. This comedy show makes good use of old HTV footage combining it with new footage creating hilarious sketches.
4. Money Spinners is a more modern Welsh version of Antiques Roadshow.
I could go on and on and on and on...
One last thing: Does any other region get HTV's Movies, Games and Videos?
I think Central used to, about 4 years ago. Probably doesn't apply now.
Movies Games and Videos is shown on HTV, meridian, Carlton westcountry, scottish and some others when they have a gap in their schedules!!
MOVIES, GAMES and VIDEOS is shown also on
Carlton Central.
>Movies Games and Videos is shown on HTV, meridian, Carlton westcountry, scottish and some others when they have a gap in their schedules!!
UTV and Border also show it. Both show it on Saturdays, and Border used to show the repeat in the regional slot at 6.30pm during the week. I'd doubt it repeats it now though.
Movies, Games and Videos is shown on Saturdays in the Anglia region.
Basically it seems that HTV are providing a network programme in the form of Movies Games and Videos!!!!
Can anyone think of any other progs that they do on a network basis???????
>Can anyone think of any other progs that they do on a network basis???????
There was that nature show with that mad Australian who kept snakes.
there was that Cornish drama Wycliffe
They provide a fair amount of children's progs as well - although you wouldn't see this because CARLtON conveniently remove all end idents except their own.

Yes, i've noticed this on CITV as well. The end captions are cut off unless they are Carlton productions. Shall I be awkward and complain to the ITC?
I've just done it now.
