Wonder if there is now going to be a bidding war for HTV :) Perhaps SMG will get in the act just to annoy Carlton!

Yes, it's true. Hurrah! Anglia, Meridian and HTV's names are saved...I hope!

I hope that Granada loose Tynes Tees because it doesn't really do much any more.

How do you lose Tyne Tees? is it easy to do. Might TTTV fall down the back of a sofa? Grananda will not sell Tyne Tees, even if in doing so they could get HTV. TTTV is so bundled into the fabric of GMG that removing it would be like removing a Borg implant from someone in Star Trek!

Tyne Tees is part of Yorkshire-Tyne Tees, and the work involved in separating the two would be very difficult.

The ITN website says that Granada media will sell not just HTV but also Anglia.
True?

ITN's website says that Granada Media will sell the stake in C5. BBC NEWS Online however says United will keep it's stake in C5.

I decided to check out Granada Media's website which makes no mention of taking control of C5, so ITN are pants and wrong. Interestingly they won't own Meridian outright - just a 79.2% stake.

Which leaves the question - what happens to Border now?

I think that Carlton should buy Meridian, after all, that's what it wanted to merge with United for.

The same company can only own two of the following: London Weekday, London Weekend, Midlands, South of England.

Carlton already own two of these, so they can't buy Meridian or LWT (and they also can't buy LWT because of the London rule).

No, we don't want Carlton here in Meridianland. We always wanted Granada to take control - so it looks like we have been saved from those amateurs in London.

It depends on the arithmetic. If the new Granada Media stations have 14.5 per cent of the television market or less, they could take it. (Anyone know that figure?).
However, as far as I understand it, Granada has a deal with Capital Radio with a three-year option to buy Border. So for the time being it's officially independent, but it's really a puppet station, about as independent as Bulgaria was in the Warsaw Pact.

Something overlooked:

"Granada said a consolidated ITV would be able to accelerate its digital strategy and rapidly develop itv.co.uk and a family of themed channels."
(from BBC NEWS ONLINE)

Hmm... Interesting...

On Anglia News this evening, it was revealed that Granada will also be getting Anglia Mutlimedia & Education divisions and Survival Films.

Also, the boss of Granada Media mentioned only the names *Anglia & Meridian*.
The rumour that Anglia will get sold off if false.

anglia wont be sold. i cant see granadataking control of asmall company like Border either. Someone else and perhaps not a tv firm will take contol of Border tv durining the next 3 yeays.Granada will want to take over the larger regions with bigger audiance figures than Border 400 000. I believe it may eventually get Scotish media or even Ulster tv which is apparently booming. I think Border will remain e usepraontinte from a major ITV company. Thats not to say Granada wont continue to have a major say in Borders program schedual and advertising. However i might be compleatly wrong and Granada take them over tomorow

Granada will go ahead with the buy out of Border so it can offer the whole of the North and East of England as a block to advertisers

I'd agree, and another reason is that integrating Border will bring savings as much can just be run from Leeds, as per other stations. It may only be small but they'll be able to make money from it.

What is the population of Border TV Land, including IoM?

I think Grampian has the smallest in the UK with 1.2 million, but Border can't be that much more.

They have an ITC audience share points value of .4, which given that Tyne Tees is 1.5 and has a pop of 3 million, and YTV is 3.2 and has a pop of 6 million, would give Border 800000. But I'm not sure about the validity of this because Ulster is 1.0, which would equate to 2 million viewers. Surely not that high?

Remember that UTV adverts (and, I suppose, programmes) can be seen by most of the Republic too, so their audience is a lot higher that perhaps it *should* be.

I heard a figure quoted to me once that around 90% of the ROI's population can receive UTV. Is this true and, if not, what is the figure nearer to?

I think it is over 50%, but not anywhere near 90%. But I'd be surprised if the ITC would include viewers outside Northern Ireland in UTV viewing figures. For the record, the province has a population of 1.6 million.

I work here in Athlone, which is in the centre of the island. Most of the houses have big feck-off aerials pointed at Brougher Mountain (I presume) in South Tyrone. Our picture quality for the 4 UK channels that BM transmits is rather poor, but I've seen other houses in the street with much better pictures.

We don't actually use the aerial for the UK channels, but instead we used MMDS - a microwave system which provides a 12 channel package for a monthly fee. There is a big mast near our house which picks up 1,2,3,4 by aerial plus some other channels from Astra 1. It retransmits these channels and we pick them up via a wire mesh dish and decoder box.

Cable companies also rebroadcast UK channels in a similar way. Some Cable and MMDS companies, especially in the far South of the country can't recieve BBCNI/UTV, so rebroadcast BBC Wales/HTV instead. Some take either BBC NI/BBC Generic from SkyDigital instead.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that those microwave companies are acting illegally rebroadcasting "foreign" signals. Is that right?

Don't think so - I'm sure I've seen it mentioned on fairly official websites -btw, THE coolest TV website in the entire world is http://www.tnag.ie the website for the Irish Gaelic channel, check it out - the intro is fab.

I don't know, certainly some, if not all 'Deflectors' are illegal - these people receive the UK channels from either Wales, Northern Ireland, or sometimes via SkyDigital via a BBC Card and rebroadcast it, charging locals on a voluntary basis for the 'upkeep' of the transmitter.

I wish someone could explain the ins and outs of it all. I spoke to someone who works at BBC NI about it and he doesn't know.

No, I was going to replace John Myers' Eric the Monkey on Border Birthdays when John left. But Andrew and Craig had problems sticking their hands up my bottom. A first I know . . .
