Guitar comedy is cop-out rubbish Posted Thu Jul 27 00:59:58 BST 2000 by Derek

Seen it in stand up clubs for years. twats changing the words to pop songs. Hoping somebody elses melody and musical expertise will cover up the fact they are not intrinsically funny people. Sadly, a lot of them do.

ps/ Bill Bailey is the exception. If you stole his guitar of him, he could still make an audience laugh, not true of most of these other chancers.

It is strange you should bring this up. I love guitar comedy! It never fails to amaze me that many funny men also harvest a talent for the guitar and aren't inhibited in showing this.

Yeah, I think you have Skint Video etc. in mind. They are/were shit. Bailey is great though.

I remember Steve Gribbin at the Comedy Store doing a song about Prince Edward's lovelife, to the tune of "Little Red Corvette", wittily entitled "Little Ted's Warm Jet".

Sean Cullen ( i think that is how it is spelt)is a great musical stand up - as is hovis presley. There must be thrifty ways to leave your lover.

I agree Sean Cullen is great as is Boothby Graffoe. But I never laugh at full force during the songs because I am often in awe that they have spontaneously whipped out a guitar and proceeded to play it so efficiently.

Comedians really do have many talents.

The host of the infamous 'Comedy Network' only now without the hair. He is a very competent comedian and guiatrist.

Derek,
Musical lampoonery is a genre like observation, absurdist, satire, self-deprecation or any other. Saying you hate guitar comics is like saying you don't like artists who use blue paint.
You've obviously seen a couple of shitters of this genre, but I, for one, am fucking fantastic.
You really are talking shit. "That Nick Hornby, take his pen off him and he wouldn't be funny at all."

Yours for an independent scottish socialist republic and nothing less,
Sandy Nelson.

Are The Sun still printing "Fighting For Independence" in their Scots edition where they print the "Audited Daily Sale" in the English one?

(Incidentally, if an independent republic's what you're after then fuck off to Uist and establish one and leave the rest of us Brits to get on with it. Cheers)

Oo er!
I've touched a Unionist nerve, then Mr. Mogwai. First, I wouldn't know what The Sun says as I don't read that shit. And secondly, is Uist all of a sudden outside the UK? Of course the Scottish population would probably fit on the whole island seeing as it was cleared of it's people last century.

Anyway, musical comedy still isn't that bad.

Yours for hanging on by our finger nails to the crumbling remains of the archaic and pointless British Empire.
Sandy Nelson.
