CENTRAL NEWS UNCOVERED Posted Mon Jul 24 08:13:15 BST 2000 by anon

The (Carlton) Central region is split into three sub-regions which locally are known as West, East and South. The West being Birmingham, East Nottingham and South Abingdon near Oxford and Swindon. This plan is all very well but when watching, for example, Central News West you begin to see Central News East's reports on places not technicaly in the West region (Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Northamptonshire etc).

These are the major towns and cities covered by each of the sub-regions:
In brackets are stations or different sub-regions which can be seen in that place (overlap areas)

Central West region: Crewe (Granada)
Wrexham (HTV Wales)
Welshpool (HTV Wales)
Coventry (Central East)
Tewksbury (Central South, HTV west)
Leicester (Central East)
Derby (Central East)
Northampton (Central East, Anglia)

Central East region: Peterborough (Anglia)
Lincoln (YTV)
Skegness (YTV)

Central South region: Northampton (Central East)
Monmouth (HTV Wales)
Luton (London)

How it should be:

Central West: Shrewsbury
Stoke on Trent
Birmingham areas
Coventry
Worcester

Central East: Nottingham
Derby
Coventry
Northampton
Leicester

Central South: Hereford
Gloucester
Swindon
Oxford
Buckingham

Surely there is some interest in what is happening in the wider region as well? Though I do get your point.

They shouldn't use another region's reports. These places are not in that region.

I disagree. You mean to say, you have no interest in what is happening in a neighbouring region? I'm sure there are some areas in another region which are closer to you than parts of your own region. Surely, if the stories are newsworthy they should be carried, albeit with lower prominance than if they were in your oen region.

You watch National News, don't you? Many of those stories have no relevance to you, but are nonetheless shown to everybody.

In Northern Ireland, they carry the occasional story from the Irish Republic - because it is a neighbour. Here, the reporters do not share reports from other stations, because there is no local BBC/ITV there.

Meridian do the same thing - eg stories from deep inside W Sussex often crop up in Meridian Tonight (South-East) - I suspect it's because some people are tuned to the wrong signal - a Southern legacy in the days when it didn't matter so much.
