It's all change in the south-east soon anyway - one programme for London and another for the south east to be broadcast from Tunbridge Wells. What will they be called? Rumour is that London's will be 'London Live'.

Who's confused?!!

It is strange that there are two Look North programmes, but 'Look North East and Cumbria' or 'Look Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and North Midlands' would be much too long-winded.

On the other hand, I would love to see BBC NI bring back 'Inside Ulster'.

>South West (Devon, Cornwall) SPOTLIGHT SOUTH WEST

Would make sense. I think it used to be called this.
>
>West (Gloucs, Bristol & Avon, Wilts, Somerset) POINTS WEST NEWS

Why news? Everybody knows what Points West is
>
>South East (Oxon, Bucks, Herts, London, Kent) LONDON PLUS

Why? Everybody knows why this name was dropped.
>
>Midlands (Shrops, Staffs, Hereford, Worcs, WMids) MIDLANDS TODAY WEST
>
>East Midlands (Derbys, Leics, Warks, Notts) MIDLANDS TODAY EAST

Why Midlands Today East and not East Midlands Today? Although West Midlands Today might make sense.
>
>East (Beds, Northants, Norflk, Sufflk, Essx, Cambs) SPOTLIGHT EAST

What is wrong with Look East?
>
>North (Yorkshires and Lincs) HEADING NORTH

Why?
>
>North East and Cumbria (Newcastle, Durham, Northumberland, Cumbria, Lakes) FOCUS NORTH

Why?
>
>Northern Ireland NEWS N.I.

Why? Newsline is an okay name (though they rarely use the 6.30 tag - it isn't on the titles any more), but they should rename it Inside Ulster.

I agree - I said as much in the above post. And Damian, I had a look at the 1987 Inside Ulster titles on your site for the first time at the weekend - I don't actually remember these, which is surprising as I was a TV Buff even then (I would have been 10). How long were they used for?

The music is cool, though. Apparently some woman wrote into point of view to ask them to play it for the whole country to hear! And they did!

Not rumour. Fact.

They will probably eventually rename them:
BBC News North West, BBC News Northern Ireland, BBC News London etc.
A bit like when Reporting Scotland was renamed Sixty Minutes Scotland in 1983, while regional news was part of Sixty Minutes.

I hope not. Regional Character is what we need.
>A bit like when Reporting Scotland was renamed Sixty Minutes Scotland in 1983, while regional news was part of Sixty Minutes.

I wonder why that was. BBC NI's Scene Around Six stayed with the same name.

The original Inside Ulster was introduced on September 3rd 1984 on the same night as the Six O'Clock News, London Plus and North West Tonight. The first titles lasted until late 1987 and were basically an attempt to suggest that Sixty Minutes had never happened by using practically the same graphics as those used in the 1981-3 Scene Around Six titles.

I think the change to the computer generated titles happened in late 1987 although the music stayed the same. For their time, the graphics were quite spectacular! BBC NI were keen to get their money's worth out of them and continued to use them at least until 1992.

I have a video of Points of View in 1988 when a vote was taken for best and worst regional news titles. Look East was worst and Inside Ulster was best!

OH, I see - that might be the the story I was talking about. Now they wouldn't do that now....

"Which is your favourite?:
Look East: Dum-dum dum dum-dum....
Points West: Dum-dum dum dum-dum....
South Today: Dum-dum dum dum-dum...."

Also, Damian, and anyone else who might know their way around Northern Ireland, could you have a look at http://members.fortunecity.com/rickyb/tvzone/gallery/tvyou.html and help me identify Locations 2,5 and 6?

Cheers,

Does anyone remember the late 1980's south today titles with the weather vane.
the graphics were quite good, but the music was top notch!

There is nothing wrong in the title *Look East* It's the content and quality of a programme that should matter, not the titles.

However, I wasn't surprised that Look East won the worst title competition, as back then in 1988 we had kitsch titles and Stuart White, today we have the standard BBC News format and Stuart White.

Perhaps, but good titles and music can do wonders for a programme. The last Look East theme was a very good tune, and so much better than their string of disasters since the late eighties.

Good old Guy Michelmore!

Actually, they were quite good - certainly compared to the trippy-looking spinning box sequence with crappy S's on the sides of it that was used up to the late 80s. The music was majestic without being too pompous. Great stuff.
