Only for the hardcore UK raver... Posted Thu Jul 13 22:19:57 BST 2000 by Al

Right, here goes. Far be it from me to take issue with The Corpses themselves but...

I thought Spaced was rather good. No, it wasn't trying "something that had never been done before" but quite clever, funny and warm all the same. It's certainly the only recent UK sitcom I really enjoyed. Watched the complete rerun via Paramount recently and it still holds up IMHO. Any thoughts?

Watched an episode recently - when tim and daisy have a flat-warming party. Not as funny as i originally remember it being, but still funnier then most of the shows i've seen recently.

I'm not going to gush like some aroused 'Time Out' scribe, but I thought 'Spaced' was excellent. Just shows there's some good in all of us, even Simon Pegg.

Have to agree - again, hyped beyond all reason but it did have a distinctive style, it was character driven to some extent, and it was funny! And if you are going to do references, Spaced showed how to do them, compared to the missing-the-point-of-the-universe stuff on Many Splintered Thing.
Remember, hype doesn't come from the people who make the programs. It comes from the rest of the media. for example, Ali G; apparently the C4 advertising budget and trailing for that was a lot less than for a typical new series. It was the papers, music press etc. looking for easy stories that gave it all the attention.
Is it right to damn fairly good shows because they are not properly assessed in context of the greats of comedy? No. Is it right to damn Hippies because it was lazy shit which missed the point of the 70s? Yes.

But wasn't it set in the late 60s?

Aaaaah, yes, that's what I meant by saying that it missed the point of the 70s. By not even being set in them. Aaaaah.
No, sorry; OK, "it failed effectively to convey the atmosphere of or comment on the late 60s period in which it was set." How's that?
