US comics / Montreal

Stewart Lee and David Baddiel often slag off Montreal Fest. because American comics there treat it as a screen test for TV/Hollywood (they say). But is there much track record of people getting talent-spotted there? Whenever I see those clip shows (not much, I find them dismal) I only recognise about 3 of them, including 2 Brits.
Also, how easy is it for US comics to climb the ladder? Do they spend years playing Baton Rouge etc. or they move to LA or NY to get lucky? Didn't Steve Martin have to tour around for about 10 years or so before he got anything out of it?

I think it is quite tough. And the majority of them do move to LA and class themselves as 'actors' as well.
A lot of them are hoping for a break at the Montreal Festival, and many would gladly take an offer of an advert.
