The Larry Sanders Show Posted Mon Jun 19 22:03:13 BST 2000 by Justin

Video and DVD out today - six classic episodes, all from the first three series, so may mean more to come.

VCI, unwisely, have put out the Bob Martin video on the same day. Oh dear.

Good to hear it's out.

Can anyone help me out on recent It's Garry Shandling Show repeats, plus early Larry?

Get in touch.

Apparently, the DVD has seven episodes, not six!

But I don't want 7 classic episodes. I want the whole lot of them. What's the betting that they bring them all out in about 2 years time (The X Files and the Simpsons did the same with their videos. They treat their fans like chumps. They know we'll have to buy everything- and I wonder how long they'll wait before then bringing those series out on DVD) Twats

What are we talking about here? A dozen overpriced videotapes to complete the set? That's not too bad is it?

Point taken - obviously I'd rather BBC2 ran all 88 again. (Unless Paramount's still showing them at the enviable 3am slot.) I'm not even sure if I'm going to be buying this. I suppose I was saying that it's quite incredible to see it on video at all. And DVD! As someone else pointed out, it's not often comedy makes it onto DVD. Maybe they're just looking to see how it sells.

But I must admit what's put me off buying it is that it's seven episodes which happen to feature guest cameos from Billy Crystal or one of the actors out of Friends. Even the first one's missing.

It is nice that a video's out with more than a pitiful three shows, though. Even The Simpsons daren't put out more than four on each tape (and that box set of Series 2 Part 1 - £35 for three tapes when they could quite easily get those 12 shows on two tapes).

But you're right, Rich. If it was chronological, I'd already be watching them now.

On a related point, why the hell is it that the BBC are happy to buy imported shows and then show them (a) after midnight, (b) at random times and/or (c) out of order?
I wrote to them asking why they did this to The Simpsons and Seinfeld and they wrote back saying "We constantly monitor the demands of our audience, but thank you for the additional feedback" (in other words, it didn't come up in the focus group, so piss off).
I think they'd be ashamed to show them peak-time because it would make them look bad due to their official policy of cancelling good shows and investing the money into another series of Last Of The Summer Wine (with an all-dead cast)..

All channels do this to American imports - its just the BBC usually buy the best ones. ITV have a habit of buying really expensive hyped shows, which plummet in ratings in American, so they show them late at night (e.g. Millennium). Which personally i find very amusing.

Did ITV ever show series 2 of Millennium? I heard they were going to, but I don't remember seeing a single episode of it. It may well be a second-rate program, but I at least want to be able to actually see it so I can judge for myself.

Pretty sure that it did get screened, but it was after midnight, and it depended which ITV region you lived in. I think they've even re-run series 1 (at least) since in London.

What I saw of it wasn't that bad - it was a bit like watching Seven every week, so it wasn't exactly a guffaw-fest, but it was ok.

Dark, in other words. If Chris Morris did a sit-com, he could use the same format - a different serial killer every week is pursued by a tortured psychological profiler. With hilarious consequences!
If I could just think of a good name for it...
