does anyone recall when Chris Evans was actually funny? Posted Sun Jun 18 12:31:55 BST 2000 by RobKins

i mean before the arrogance of TFI, the shambolic (but admittantly half good, stop looking at me i was 14 at the time) Don't forget your toothbrush, or even the big breakfast

what my point is *ahem*, does anyone recall "Power Up" with Chris Evans on the ill fated British Satellite Broadcasting's Power Station music channel?
containing Chris Evans, a camera team which later showed up on the ITV kids TV Mayhem show. Used to be on 5 times a week and was so obviously cheap and rushed it was funny (really!)
Man in a Kagoul (spelt wrong but it's a terminology for anorak, and i'm illiterate) in particular was class

also around was SwingShift on the same channel with Jonno (rather rotound aussie), which featured badly dubbed yet hilarious japanese sentai show material.

beats MTV and steps doesn't it?

Of course chris evnans is hilarious!

i first met him in 1995 when he was working on DFYT. Backthen of course, he was just an annoying ginger twat, who thought have lots of money and attractive girls on his show would make him popular. A lot different to how his is now, i'm sure you'll agree!

I bumped into him when i was under the influence of a massive drugs bender, and we immediatly hit it off. The massive drugs bender was annoyed, but he got over it, and forged a succesful football career during Euro '96 (although he never gave me any credit) Chris told me about how much money he had, and the nect day i got to touch and count it. By now i realised how much of a friend of his i was, and saw i actually got to talk to him that weekend!

He told me all about his new tv show TFI friday, which i thought was a very cheeky name, and it was ME who suggested we call it Thank FOUR It's Friday. You know that still makes me laugh, even now.

But i digress. I have now beed Chris's personal script writer for over four years, and have forged a semi-successful career on the semi-successful channel 4. Now, alas, tfi friday has been cancelled.

Lokking back over the past years, i see we had a lot of good times and a lot of bad times (Will). But my own real regret, after all this time, is making sure that ginger cunt became more popular than me, when he was using my material.

Oh, and Sleeper

Ciao for now, sweeties,
Danny Baker

Don't blame me for any mistakes in the previous message - DB was very emotional when he wrote it. He'd just been buggered up the arse, hollyoaks stle, by cheeky, cock-sucking goon Worthers.

Or whatever he's called

Thank you Danny for your DAZzling insight.

Mrs Doris Mary Evans shat out Chris on September 9th 1968. An ugly child Evans kept himself to himself. He got his first break when the kettle at Radio North broke. Chris offered to bring his mum's kettle in and Chris' kettle was given a year contract. But Chris was not content to let his kettle be the star. Chris set about trying to impress his employers at Radio North. This didn't work so Evans begged and crawled his way into a job. Chris came to the attention of Bob Geldof. Geldof was looking for exciting fresh talent. Until he could find some he reluctantly agreed to take Evans on. Chris made a deep impression on the young blood at Channel 4. The rest is history.

The trouble is: it could have been any zany fool. Bear in mind Timmy Mallett (for whom Evans worked at Piccadilly in the mid-80s) was also something of a git to his staff. It could have been him. Indeed, it could have been countless other local radio nobodies.

Chris Moyles. Is he next?

God, i hope not. He's far too similar to Evans, except he's fat not ginger. His radio show is appaling, as was the show he did on UKPLay, which was a waste of time even by their poor standards.

Him and his bunch of tossers should piss off back to local radio - although leeds is too close to home for my liking.

Evans did a show for GLR in the early 90s called The Green Room aimed at young teens. My sis used to listen to it - that was quite funny. The last thing he did which I found funny was his Too Much Gravy show on Sundays on Radio 1. It only lasted about 8 weeks when Evans decided he hated the BBC and pissed off. I think he was mediocre at best after that. Now it's quite sad watching him - another man fallen victim to his own hype - Oasis next (hopefully)

I know bread and milk have sell-by dates but I didn't know humour had. Could you give me one or two examples please of 1992 "pseudo-surreal fake biographies" of the 1992 type. I also take it that dr_hackenbush isn't your real name. "pseudo-surreal fake names are so, as you say, 1992. Do something useful, go whore yourself in your local bog.

I remember when i first met pseudo-surreal fake biographies. It was back in the '60's, during the hieght of flower power, when, of course, anyone could get away with being psuedo-surreal and fake. Biograpies wanted to make a name for themself, and wanted to achieve the perfect 15 minutes of fame, so decided to use this pseudo-surreal, fake edge as it's trademark.

Throughout the '70's the biographies thrived, when artists such as Bowie and Bolan realised it's pseudo-surreal and fake powers could be a useful gimmick, and so set themselves up as Nazi Sympathisers, and starred in taky films opposite Jennifer Connely (or was that just Bowie?)

Alas, this sucess, and the serious nature of the '80's led to the sad, undignified death of the psuedo-surreal, fake biographies in 1992, found with it's cock in a prostitutes mouth, in a brothel near Amsterdam.

A sad, yet suitable emding, i'm sure you'll agree.

Does anyone remember when "funny" doctor names were funny?

Does anyone remember when pointing out that something isn't funny anymore was ever an excuse for posting a message in a forum?

etc. etc.

More, please, this is marvelous stuff!

Yes thank you PJ. I think you've cleared that up for us (wonderful insight I should add.)

Peter Ohanraohanrahan makes a very good point. I hope the good Doctor takes note.

I thank the honorable Gee for that contribution, and further would like to add that this debate has been most stimulating, and has for the most part been carried out in an entirely honourable way.

I remember way back in 1997, when TFI had just been granted another 40 shows, evans reached his comic apex with an off-the-wall excercise in surreal, thought provoking, observational social satire. Of course, who could forget 'kids in mash', a fine example of what made evans great in the first place. The fact that he could offer expensive jingles (written by dan of the breakfast show) and on screen graphics , to such a throw-away piece of whimsy meant evans had managed to secure a place in my heart forever. (The tricuspid valve). Of course, i could be lying.

One day when I was off sick from school I watched BB past eight o'clock, and they (for reasons which evade recollection right now) sent him up in a big red helicopter, which did big loops (it was, I remember, a very fast helicopter). He was sick, live on telly and (ngh) everything. That was quite funny. Past that, watching him being demolished by Howa(e?)rd Stern (himself something of a nincompoop) was fairly amusing.

Anyway, this is my first post here, so can someone insult me out of context, allowing me to become increasingly embittered (and decreasingly coherent) over the next three or four weeks to the general dismay of one and all? Please? I promise to falsely reveal myself as some kind of media personality by week two.

An example would be something like "Stop using brackets so much, you cock".

Let's hope the Priory next - as if we need a lightwieght version of TFI Friday - Do Ginger Productions actually produce a decent show? Just 1 decent show? Is that too much to ask?

>Stop trying to get people to insult you, you twat

Thanks. Incidentally, I'm A Producer Somewhere.

<pause for 'effect'>

OK, you got me, I'm Ted Danson. But haha! I am not. I am Sid Owen. Well I say that, I actually mean I am both Ted Danson AND Sid Owen. And Angela Rippon, too.

So there, PJ "And Duncan".

But anway, "Ickle Chris". I was younger at the time but I did used to like his early things - then again, I fancied Gaby Roslin too. Puberty does this. I used to like the 'energy', and when you're that age, it can all seem really daring an' that. And secretly (although fairly shy and - well, let's face it now - ugly), I used to want to do the whole live telly thing.

As luck would have it, getting older hardened my cynicism. And I Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way! <wipes brow>

Seems folks are finally sticking the knife into that execrable show. John Cusack was quoted in some mag or other on his TFI appearance - "[Evans] was so overfamiliar. After 5 minutes he was carrying on like we were best buddies... he definitely has some issues. I hate to use the word 'asshole'..."

I'm always surprised by the people who willingly appear on TFI - especially the Brits who surely know what Evans is like. Surely plugging your new book/film/etc to a modest Ch4 audience isn't worth the embarrassment?

Ben Elton was always on TFI, plugging his book/film/fuck all - do we need anymore proof that his career was gone down the toilet?
