NEW GOLDEN TV CHANNEL Posted Fri Jun 16 16:38:24 BST 2000 by Edia

My company has plans for GTN - The Golden Television Network. It will show programmes such as TV-am in the morning and Tizwas on Saturday. All the idents will be old fasioned and continuity will be on screen. We won't churn out the usual 'old' stuff that UK GOLD serves (fancy showing DINNERLADIES and THE ROYAL FAMILY!). The programmes will be old classic programmes. The project won't start for a year or so. What do you think?

Are you planning to closedown between 2pm and 4pm, showing a testcard or pages from your teletext service, with the added delight of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Taxi? And I hope you're not planning to broadcast beyond midnight...

But otherwise, sounds about as good as it gets. Will it be on cable as well?

I'll be looking out for it. What'll it be called? Who'd advertise on it? You've gotta do it! I'll be watching it every waking moment and I'll even buy the advertised products to keep the channel going.

You could even put old ads on! "For mash, get Smash" "murray Mints, Murray Mints, too good to hurry mints" "Tiger in your tank"

This'll be HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there much Tiswas available? I'd thought most of it had been destroyed.
And is there much of a market for Nick Owen and Anne Diamond reading the bingo numbers from a 1984 edition of the Daily Mirror?
However, I am all for Pages from Ceefax (the wilderness years) making a comeback.
Can we also have old weather forecasts? With the weathermen walking around the studio from map to map with magnetic symbols.
And a whole night of Election 1974 (either one) would be great.

I think that we will broadcast throughout the day until about 11:30pm and show a test card, but, as I said before, that sort of planning hasn't started yet.
Your ideas are much appreciated.

think about this right.

UK Gold is supposed to show classic BBC & Thames comedy & drama until it was released. Since then it has shown The Royle Family & Dinnerladies which alot of people liked but where made in 1999.

Granada Plus however show programmes no newer than Minder in 1994 & a few programs made by LWT in the late 80's/ early 90's & although half of them are crap you do get old classic programs such as bless this house that was made by Thames in 1975 or older but their programs are still older than UK Gold

so I hope this new channel does actually show programmes that are at least ten years old like 1989 and progams such as the sweeny, rainbow, minder & other great programs plus please don't hsow anything made by carlton or GMTV in ten years time

I think you should do this for about 25 years, then go 24-hour, remove most of the clocks and good logos and remind us what it was like in 2000.

The problem with sarcasm is that it doesn't come accross in text very well, eh hector?

Programmes? Off the top of my head (and where tapes exist, which may well not be the case): Tiswas, OTT, TW3/BBC3, Marmalade Atkins, 70's/80's Tomorrows World (with Michael Rodd), Old 'The News' (tapes of which almost definately exist), and how about - after closedown - classic pages from Ceefax?

How about this?

A Typical Tuesday (it has to be Tuesday, because....)

0915 Transmitter Information from Crawley Court
0930 For Schools & Colleges (unlike current daytime telly, you might learn something....)
1200 Bert & Ernie shorts from Sesame Street
1210 Pipkins
1230 The News with Robert Kee
1300 Pebble Mill with Donny MacLeod and Bob Langley, not Alan Tichmarsh and Judi Spiers
1345 Watch With Mother/See Saw: Bod, The Herbs, Joe, Fingerbobs, Gordon Murray etc.
1400 Testcard with music including "Spanish Flea", Duke Ellington's "Carnival" and "Matrimony" by Gilbert O'Sullivan
1530 Oh, It Was Rubbish After All Then (first in a new series revisiting old programmes and concluding that they were pups. Today's contender: The Cedar Tree. Tomorrow's contender: Solo with Felicity Kendal.)
1600 Playschool, preferably with Derek Griffiths and Brian Cant
1620 Terrible and cheap Hanna-Barbera cartoon: Today: Lippy The Lion and Hardy Har-Har
1625 Jackanory: Kenneth Williams reads Agaton Sax
1640 Vision On
1700 John Craven's Newsround
1705 Classic Serial: what about the original version of Phoenix & The Carpet from the mid-70s? (Alternate with dubbed European serials)
1730 Short programme before the news time: Clangers, Barbapapa, The Mole, Ludwig and/or The Magic Roundabout (Eric Thompson era)
1740 Classic News
1800 Heddiw (News In Welsh) (it would be particularly authentic for non-Welsh speakers like me growing up in Wales in the 70s)(English regions would show the most brililant programmes ever, meanwhile. Tonight, the whole edition of "Today" where Bill Grundy met The Sex Pistols)
1825 Video of "Dear John" by Status Quo, for no particular reason, other than the fact that there's a five-minute gap in the schedule
1830 Laurel & Hardy (film, not cartoon, obviously)
1850 Tom & Jerry Triple Bill (if it was three in a row, it was as ecstatic as childhood got)
1905 Top Of The Pops (old 45 minute editions)
1950 M*A*S*H
2015 Minder
2100 Old "The Nine O'Clock News"; Weather
2125 The Goodies (or Innes Book Of Records, Hot Metal, Not the Nine uncut, Fist Of Fun etc)
2155 Mike Leigh's Nuts In May (also to be shown: Dennis Potter, Reginald Perrin series 3, Boys From The Blackstuff, Monocled Mutineer, Play For Today and Screen Two greats like After Pilkington, Edge Of Darkness)
2320 Late Night Line Up, or Wait Till Your Father Gets Home, or Soap
2345 Weather; Closedown

Must admit, I don't really care about the revival of TV-am. But otherwise, sounds good to me...

Yes old news HAS to exist for documentaries and stuff. Sad thing is they may not be allowed to use real Ceefax or TC or news because of copyright, i hope im wrong but....

Get old BBC and ITV clocks (once again, copyright) and idents that will add to the nostalgic fell. Replicas of old idents sadly wouldn't be the same for me. this must be AUTHENTIC! DAMN COPYRIGHT!

We are planning to use the original pre-programme idents before each programme. Sansomedia can pay the companies for use of these.

We plan to use our own clock, but it will be closely based on past clocks - and it will have a nostalgic feel about it.

The last I heard, the Southern Television archive was owned by Primetime Television, who were based at Seymour Mews House, Seymour Mews, Wigmore Street, London W1H 9PE (Tel: 020-7935 9000). I have a sneaky feeling that either Primetime no longer exist, or are known as their parent company RPTA, based at 31 Eastcastle Street, London W1 (Tel: 020-7631 1300).

When the How? programme was revived as How 2? it was made initially by TVS, therefore the rights to these series are probably with the company that bought TVS (The Family Channel?). Later series of How 2? have been made by Scottish Television.

Hope this helps!

Originally, it was 9.15am. But that was in the first couple of disastrous months of TV-am.
TV-am wanted to do a revamp and stay on the air for another 10 minutes. The IBA had to get permission from the ITV companies to go to 9.25am. The first five minutes of the day were used, in most regions, for regional news for some time.
When daytime television started properly on ITV, and schools were shifted, the IBA wanted something more newsy and heavier than TV-am at the 9.30am slot. Ironic, given Peter Jay's "mission to explain" philosophy which so soon gave way to bingo numbers and Roland Rat.
In the end, we got The Time The Place, but at 10am. Its more newsy agenda was soon dropped, too.

Edia - I can probably think of quite a few, I'll keep sending them as I think of them. To start with a few SF ones:
Star Maidens (Southern, mid 70s)
Knights of God (TVS? Yorkshire? mid 80s)
Flipside of Dominic Hyde (BBC early 80s)
Doomwatch (BBC 70s)
Kids:
Data Run (LWT? 80s)
Dramarama
There have been several Gerry Anderson re-runs but what about The Secret Service, a part puppet, part live action show which was only shown on certain ITV regions and to my knowledge has never been repeated.
Comedy:
End of Part One (ITV (region?) 80s)
Spitting Image (First four years or so)

Oh yeah - all of Arthur C Clarke's Mysterious World, and James Burke's Connections (in fact anything with these two in) Carl Sagan's Cosmos would be pretty cool too.

I've said it once and i'll say it again, EastEnders from 1985-1990. The classics.

Old John Craven's Newsround followed by a classic Blue Peter.
Magic Roundabout then old news. (It DOES exist 'cos it's seen on documentaries and shows like Auntie's Bloomers)
During the day you could show old Pages from Ceefax, maybe 13:30-15:00.
Early Countdown and 15 to 1 (Channel 4)
The Krypton Factor.

Before closedown play the Anthem and put up a black screen and in the morning a test card, possibly based on the famous Test Card F or PM5544, or "Ceefax AM" or "Oracle/4-Tel on View". Old fashioned weather forecast sequences based on the old type, but actuually showing tomorrow's weather could be shown before cutting to the clock and then GSTQ+globe. Or to do it the ITV way you could put "The Epilogue" on so everyone switches off their TV. :)

How about - given that SVHS videos have been in use since the late 80's (as far as I know), and capture the Teletext signal as well as the picture, how about using classic Oracle as the text service. Intelfax (I think) would probably clear it for use, especially as they don't hold the teletext franchise anymore. This is the method ParamountText used a few years back to re-show forgotten Teletext soap Park Avenue.

C'mon... Jon Homer's Blue Suede Views, old Sam Brady, Football news from 1988... it'd be fantastic.

May it be noted that the channel is in very early stages of planning and that no application has been made to any broadcasting authority. This thread is used for research on what programmes that you would like to see and if you have any ideas on idents clocks etc.
I recieved an e-mail from the hosts of this forum that said it was unsure whether this is a hoax or not.
To set the record straight: Planning has started on a new idea for a television channel that will show old television programmes. We requested ideas and we have recieved them and much appreciated them. We appologise for people who have been led to believe that the channel would definately go ahead. I did stress in my earlier messages that the channel was in very early stages of planning.
The only message that I would like to correct was the one where I said the channel would be ready in a tear and a half. We do not definately have a date set.
We still really appreciate any ideas that you have.

How about having each week a "Black & White Night" showing old Armchair Theatres and ATV Plays / Serials in fact anything from 1955-69 (ITV's entirely B/W period)
