"ironic" comedy Posted Fri Jun 16 14:52:49 BST 2000 by dr_hackenbush

It seems like the thing to do when you don't have much talent is to tell bad jokes and pretend to be doing it "ironically". For example, that god-awful talking head computer presenter thing on Jack Dee's last show: not a parody of any recognisable comedian or thing (not even, really, of Max Headroom), it tells bad jokes in deliberately cheesy way.
For example, everything Mel and Sue have ever done.
For example, every joke ever done on The Priory, and everything Jamie Theakston does or says.
This isn't using irony in comedy, but doing comedy ironically - ie, the joke is that to the uninitiated, you might appear to be trying to be funny, but the true audience know that you're only pretending.
I've seen people who are like this in real life too.

Oh yes, Barratt and Fielding, from what I've seen of them, could also be described as "ironic" comedy.

"Look at you, you cheeky moths".
