Jerry Sadowitz Posted Wed Jun 14 01:30:38 BST 2000 by McGinty

The greatest stand up comic on the alternative circuit ever. He got ignored completely in that 'History of Alternative Comedy' travesty a few years back presented by Angus Deayton (in favour of clips of Donna McPhail, Phil Jupitus etc.) Bill Hicks gets all the credit for stuff he did first, when all Hicks acheived, when you take away the cancer, was to become an American Ben Elton. Sadowitz is a national treasure and is treated like shit by the comedy establishment (most of whom are freeloading chancers who know nothing about comedy anyway). He is a Channel 5 celebrity, and the way his massive influence on the comedy scene has been ignored, he's lucky to be that. Show more respect you bastards!

Watching Ben Elton on the Richard Blackwood Show I pondered: if only he'd been hit by a fast car around 1987-89. That may sound cruel to some (personally I think he's getting off lightly considering his recent work) yet there can be no denying that Elton filters more sewage than Thames Water. Elton , I believe, is currently working with the musical environmentalist Andrew Recycle Webber. The collaboration became possible when the two stars dropped their political differences. When asked if it wasn't a sell out, Ben replied that it was as good as money in the bank.

The Hicks and Elton comparison is ludicrous. Hicks was the best.

I agree that the Hicks comparison with
Ben Elton is complete shite- you only need to hear Hick's stuff to realise that. No griping about duff tea-pots there.
Sadowitz is fantastic, and his work is more concentrated on being offensive than political, unlike Bill Hicks'. Sadowitz has also suffered from being too 'dangerous' for many companies, despite being very funny. I went to see his recent tour focused on his magic tricks rather than his stand-up act. It was very, very good, and I was extremely impressed, even though I've never been that interested in magic.
He's also one of the few people who can make me helpless with laughter throughout their stand-up act. Yet, he's earning a rubbish wage in a magic shop instead of being a well-known and respected comedian. We live in a strange world....

I quite like what I've seen of him (namely, that Channel 5 show he did) but he was strangely rubbish on a TFI Friday appearance a few years back. Was he being deliberately crap just to show up Evans and Co, or did they just catch him on a bad day?

Incidently, my browser keeps being invaded by an annoying Freeserve drop-down menu that keeps materialising from nowhere. Is anyone else having this problem?

You're right, Mr Sadowitz is an excellent comedian and an even better sleight-of-hand trickster. I remember the Channel 4 series he did years ago - one sketch about two guys playing chess and insulting each other to put each other off ("You're mother's a lousy shag" "So's your sister") had me in hysterics. And anybody who gives up comedy at the height of their success to go and work in a Glasgow magic shop has integrity in my opinion. If only Ben Elton had done so. The Beautiful Game, indeed! An Andrew Lloyd Webber musical with lyrics by Ben Elton about football, set to the backdrop of the Troubles in Northern Ireland? Christ, it sounds like an audience suggestion in "Whose Line is it Anyway"!
