Offensively Nice Posted Mon Jun 12 20:53:12 BST 2000 by PJ

Baddiel and Skinner unplanned on tonight of course... notice how Frank always gets away with his offensive jokes because he's such a nice amiable chap. Which leads to the question: is there any other comedians who are so charming that they can get away with saying anything? (Apart form Bernard "I don't have to use the F-word to make my jokes funny" Manning)

I wouldn't be too sure about Skinner "getting away with it"... the other week in The Sun Garry Bushell was foaming at the mouth (metaphorically, well no, perhaps he really was when he wrote it) that Skinner should be banned from doing live TV because of some reference to child abuse he'd made.

On second thoughts, Bushell is an irrelevant twat who has no influence over anything. So perhaps Skinner has "got away with it".

And even though he is a twat, you read his column.

Now who is the twat?

Damn, you've got me there... well, I have to read it to see if he's suddenly improved. He never does, though.

Cor! Whataload of old codswallop you talk! I am the number one television critic. I know what your game is alright make no mistake about that. I've got that covered. You don't like my honesty. I was the first critic to call a puff a puff and favour Page 3 beauties over female comedians. Don't get me wrong we need laughter in the world but when a bloke gets home from work he wants something to look at. That Jo Brand don't make me laugh and she aint much to look at either. Last time I see anything that ugly in a dress, it was jumping through hoops at the circus. Moving on, people often say, Gary, you're a bit of a sexist and like a pint -- what's your view of women in sport. I say it perfectly OK as long as it's the Sunday Sport. No seriously, listen, I was at a party last week and someone comes up to me and says: "Gary have you ever given any a good review for money?" I said: "I never given anyone a good review. You obviously don't read my column." And as I said to Richard Little John: "You should thank me." Why he said. I said: "Because if it wasn't for me you'd be the biggest wanker in Britain." We both laughed. But I love it. I love the buzz. I love the idea that I'm being paid to watch telly vision. I don't dictate my tastes on anyone. I allow my readers to think for themselves. Which is after all what The Sun is all about. I know a lot of these bleeding heart liberals think we're the Devil or something like that but that's rubbish. The reason why there's nothing about education in The Sun is because we don't want to brain wash our readers, we just want them to enjoy our paper. The reason The Times does all that sort of thing is because the people reading that kind of paper expect more for their kids, that's all. It's nothing sinister.

If there was an award for biggest wanker, people wouldn't vote for Littlejohn anyway - he's such a wanker people wouldn't want him to pick up a prize for it.

Wait, what i'm i saying? I love Littlejohn - he's writing an hilerious column in my new lads mag - it's called 'tits!!' , and is a subtle insight into women and sport and being 5 years late. We also got a regular column written by Myra Hindley, to show what a lovable rogue she is...
"...i was at the preimiere of that new film by Nick Park the other day. I had recieved a special invetation from the man himself because he loves me so much!! The film is about chickens or something, and was great, although it needed more woman to be honest. Anyway after the film, who should i find waiting for me but my celeb mate Mel Gibson, who was crying his eyes out. I asked him what was wrond. "Oh Myra," he said, "I can't believe you're dying from lung cancer. Which bastard did this to you? If only i had a spare set of lungs, i'd give them to you in a flash". I don't know, celebs these days. I'm friends with Babs Winsor don't you know..."

One of the funniest things I've seen Skinner say on that show was the bit where he referred to saying on his BBC chat show "Ladies and gentlemen, Rose West!". (Band start playing Go West, audience very excited.) Yes it's bad taste, but God I laughed. I think Skinner is merely doing publicly what most people do privately/in the office. The live format gives them the chance to say anything, and this is mainly a good thing. (The only fly in the ointment: most of the audience, who are NOT FUNNY. Fortunately, they are easy prey for Frank and David.)

Shame it's the last one tomorrow. Dave B - if it is you contributing - any plans for any more?

YES, that's the trouble with all 'audience participation' stuff.

Skinner's offensive comments are at their most amusing when they make Baddiel squirm.

e.g. the other day when someone said they knew someone who looked like Baddiel, Skinner asked, "What's he called, Hairy Jew?" or something like that.

And Baddiel weakly said, "Not a show goes by without some reference to Jews..."

Frank Skinner gets away with his 'offensive' comments because they're actually very funny.
And all power to him.

It's always Frank who spots the potential "comedy culdesacs" when baddiel says something like "cheer up - it may never happen" or similar.
cant remember the exact phrases but skinner spotted quite a few of them. so presumably He's thinking carefully before he speaks. although more out of concern for getting a laugh than offending people.

It was frank who spotted potential trouble when david started talking about prince wotsits ex girfriends when he was at college with him
