Room 101 Posted Fri Jun 9 17:28:33 BST 2000 by Justin

These days Nick Hancock is best known for goading minor quipsters into saying funny things about men with odd-shaped balls, and doing voiceovers for absolutely bloody anything whatsoever. (Bill Hicks was right.)

But Room 101, in its original radio incarnation on Radio 5 (1992-1994), had its gems over three series. There was no audience (not just in the studio, sadly - ratings probably weren't good either), which meant that more esoteric choices were allowed, and especially pop records (whereas the TV incarnation didn't dare choose anything more contentious than "UNa Paloma Blanca" and rubbish like Richard E Grant choosing school dinners - yeah, thanks for that insightful selection, Rich). Choice of guests was patchy but Paul Merton, Danny Baker, Steve Punt, Baddiel, Skinner and John Walters were all terrific value. Sadly towards the end, too many mediocrities were invited along (Kevin Day??? Rory Mc Grath???? Chris England??? - Hancock's mates, effectively). But at the beginning, it was fine enough. Anyone else catch any of it?

Yes, radio version the best thing Nick Hancock's ever done. Had an ability that show to make you like guest celebrities that you otherwise weren't too keen on.

The David Baddiel show sticks in my mind best, but yes it stands head and shoulders above the TV show.

Always wondered why they never repeated the Danny Baker show from season one of the TV version. It was pretty good.

Loved the Eurodisney home video, and almond-assisted suicide in Casualty. Peter Cook being suddenly able to open unopenable food packaging was top-notch too.

We asked BBC RAdio Collection to release selected radio shows on tape. They said they couldn't do it because everyone would get confused that Paul Merton wasn't the presenter.

Not that the BBC thinks we're all plebs or anything...

Thne paul merton version is a load of crud, though. at least Hancock would appear to be slightly less than a yes-man to whatever celebrity appears this week...

I'm pretty sure the first series of 101 (July 4 - August 22 1994) was repeated during 1995 on BBC2. But...you had to look round the schedules to find them, and it began to look like they were slotted in to any spare half-hour slot that was going. Same went for the second series (Autumn 1995), but I'm pretty sure the knackered third series has not been repeated.

The Merton incarnation, against all the odds, has had its moments. John Sergeant's appearance is one of the very best.

Justin, do you have the first series on tape? If so, you may well be remembered in our respective wills.

Not all of it, I'm afraid - have got the Merton one from when it was repeated on Radio 1 in 1994, plus Baker, Punt, Nightingale and most of the Arthur Smith one (tape ran out after about 20 mins or so). Actually, that is almost all - anyone got the Jenny Eclair one? Quite funny - I seem to remember she chose the DLT/Paul Burnett Convoy GB record...

There's one missing from your list at least, Trevor & Simon, the kids TV hosts. I have this and a few others kicking around on tape in stereo (recorded it of satellite radio station). Want me to dig them out?

Was this when Chris Morris' show was suspended for a few weeks because of the Hestletine incident? I remember they played a few of these then.

Stereo? What Satellite Radio Station?

They ran eight shows from the three series in January and February 1994 (in no particular order, I think it was Nightingale, Baker, Baddiel, Skinner, Merton, Lamarr, and two others which I'm not sure of).

You're right about it replacing Morris for two weeks (13-20 July 1994). One was Chris "Evening With Gary Lineker" England -
I think I said "Heard it - and it ain't that good" and switched off. Missed the following week's show. I think the hour was completed both weeks with Alan Parker compilations.

I thought the Paul merton radio one was very good. Though all I remember is him going on about the fantastic rhyme of 'Bermuda Triangle' with 'see it from my angle'. I remember something with Tony Slattery where he picks an Everything But the Girl song but I think that may have been that time when comedians where DJ for an hour. I'm sure I remember him being quite good. And Angus Deayton being a bit rubbish?
That's such a lame excuse about the Radio Room 101 not being released. Particulary when most people who think of the TV version think of Nick Hancock as the presenter of it anyhow. I didn't see any of Paul merton's series. And Nick did at least 2 TV series. Why would people be confused anyhow? Bloody stupid. Could they not get over their confusion should there be any in the first place, and just accept that nick Hancock presented the radio version. Bloody stupid if you ask me.
I was quite fond of the Frank Skinner TV one "They should 'ave 'ad one on a string'. Ahh, fond memories. I quite liked the Caroline Quentin one too I think. Was that genuine fear at the thought Nick producing a rat?

I saw an interview with QC before that went out, where she claimed that the fear was genuine and Merton was stood on the sidelines killing himself laughing. She didn't want them to show that bit but he persuaded her it was brilliant TV. It wasn't very long after that they split up was it?

Fantastic bit where they keep playing Kenneth More's annoying chuckle from Genevieve. To Merton's obvious discomfort. (Every time I walk past or into the Genevieve pub on Streatham High Road, I am reminded of it. What a tiny life I own.)

Those were the Radio 1 Sunday lunchtime slots for comedy people (early 94). Seem to remember Reeves & Mortimer doing a turn as well.

>That's such a lame excuse about the Radio Room 101 not being released. Particulary when most people who think of the TV version think of Nick Hancock as the presenter of it anyhow. I didn't see any of Paul merton's series.

Actually it was alright, certainly better than the final Hancock TV series (1997). Look out for when they repeat the John Sergeant one - he's really, naturally funny.

And Nick did at least 2 TV series.

Three TV series, and four on the radio.

Why would people be confused anyhow? Bloody stupid. Could they not get over their confusion should there be any in the first place, and just accept that nick Hancock presented the radio version. Bloody stupid if you ask me.

The Sophie's Choice bit. God, I wish I videoed it.

I think so, and I don't blame her. I'd have hit him for doing that. Rats - *shivers*.
