Mark+Lard/Roger Mcgough Posted Fri Jun 9 14:41:33 BST 2000 by Charlotte G

My God.
Mark+Lard are playing S Club 7.
How ironic.

Anyone here know Roger Mcgough? He's a very good poet. I did a search on him in the library database and EIGHTY NINE books came up. And I've never seen a bad poem of his. Why do they only give him 15 minutes of time on Radio 4? He deserves more than that, especially sometime earlier than 11 'o' clock, they also put Yes Sir I Can Boogie on at this time, which should only be reserved for the 11 'o' Clock Show (no time at all should be allocated for the 11 'o' Clock Show). So anyway, everyone on here should read his books, listen to his shows and generally worship him because he's ace.

I'm going to see Time Gentlemen Please being filmed! WOW!

I've used proper capitals throughout the whole of this entry! Aren't I grown up?

Bye then

Roger McGough did a tour of the schools in my home town, ooh it must have been at least 22yrs ago. He got us all to write poems for him and chose about 20 to print out in a booklet. Two of those were mine - so he obviously inspired me. Sadly this is my only claim to fame.

In case you didn't know, Charlotte, he was also in the group Scaffold which released Lily The Pink, probably closer to 30 yrs ago.

He is actually quite famous...my friend wrote her PHD dissertation on him. His work is so much more than comedic children's poetry and I would recommend that you read 'Defying Gravity', 'Summer with Monika', 'Holiday on Death Row' (to name but a few) if you haven't already done so.

Hm...the Scaffold with Paul McCartney's brother...wonder who got the looks in that family :o)

"Summer With Monika"? Like the Bergman film?

I'm afraid I grew up on Merseyside in the 70s, so had rather too much early exposure to the Scouse poets (Adrian Henri et al). At least McGough's an Evertonian...

He's Peel's understudy on R4's "Home Truths", I believe.

At least he isn't John Hegley.

I quite like John Hegley you can never have too many poems about specs in my opinion, even if they ultimately say exactly the same thing. I like my glasses and John likes his glasses, perhaps I'm just not brave enough to air my views in public, hm...I might just go away and lament my glasses for a while and see what I come up with.
I haven't actually read anything by John Hegley, only seen him perform a couple of times, does he have books? Should I read them?

I like my glasses too, I just don't like John Hegley. I think it's his whining voice above all else. I don't find his poems funny or thought-provoking, sorry. But I'm not out to start fights or anything, and I'd defend to the death* anyone's right to hear/enjoy his work.

(*I'd expect the bastard to come to my funeral after that though.)
