Mark Lamarr, apparently.
Iain 'like' is a phase of opinion on comedy that was surpassed about a decade ago. Get with it man. It ain't trendy to 'like' any comedy.
The way we are meant to 'enjoy' comedy nowadays is to pull it apart and stifle our laughter in the chance we might miss a flaw in the writing.
I suffer a major sense of humour genetic failing. I can't stop myself laughing without scrutinising first. It is a cross to bare. I even laughed at 'Couplings' dare I say more than a couple of times. I am coming here in an effort to 'save myself'. Hopefully I can train my laughter sensor to become dormant until the Goons are repeated.
Thin Blue Line (shameful), Coupling (pitiful), Ally McBeal (the script is as thin as the actresses), Harry Hill (if laughter is the best medicine, this fucker Dr Shipman), The Richard Blackwood Show (proves positive discrimination can promote people incapable of doing their job ), Jim Davidson (living proof that the Luftwaffe didn't drop enough bombs on the east end).
I find that I don't laugh at all at today's comedy (not for a couple of years actually) and as a struggling comedy writer find myself criticising it, but I think that its instinctive - you either laugh at something or you don't. And Sod all this 'trendy to like comedy' nonsense. The last thing we want in comedy clubs is tons of trendies trying to out laugh one another.
If 'elitism' just means pointing out that some acts/shows are better than others, then what's wrong with it? Galton&Simpson or The Pythons were brilliant, that just gets more obvious when you consider how intricate some of their stuff was (yeah, scrutinising the scripts), and you also see that second-raters or imitators can't manage it, or could do better.
Apart from 11OCS (dec'd), I don't see any party line about what you should like/hate in here... as discussed on another strand, The Corpses have their own current faves, but they've all been attacked here at one time or other, some of them by me.
As a newcomer to this site ,I am baffled by The Corpses. They say they are not" fans" of comedy, not involved in the business, and not getting paid for this site. Why and how do they know so much about the machinations of the business? Why arent THEY jaded? What goes in their head when they watch comedy? Are they like an overworked gynaechologist going down on his girlfriend? Why do they have such collosall expectations in shows/performers, when generally 99% of things will invariably dissappoint? Why does it always get personel ?Are they misanthropic? Why do they despise people who laugh at comedy that doesnt quite fit their agenda?Do they TRULY love comedy?Where did it all go wrong?Do they think all dance music is crap and not as good as The Beatles?Probably.Love the site though.Keep it up Corpses.
I reckon at least one of 'em works in TV anyway. (Stir, stir) Mike Scott used to do The Time The Place before John Stapleton, didn't he? Incidentally, I hate "Whole Of The Moon".
"Elitism in Comdey, Your thoughts please. "
I used to live in Comdey. You wouldn't believe the elitism in those days...
Justin, I also made the claim that the Corpses were unsuccessful writers/comics a while back, and Rob S sneered at me... so I suppose that proves it.
So the corpses have failed to make any inroads in the comedy business but doing this site makes them feel involved in some way.I see.Fair enough.
Has it ever occured to you why certain people achieve success in the comedy business and why some don't? The comedy business works in the same way as the rest of the media-the marketable stuff gets the exposure while other stuff either doesn't get made or gets shoved in an anti-social time slot and gets little publicity. I'm sure Richard Herring would be able to enlighten you further about this process. As for stating that you don't expect most stuff to be funny-this is the exact same excuse that the current Cambridge Footlights are using to justify their own crap material. If you settle for second best, you get second best. This is what this site is all about.
>So the corpses have failed to make any inroads in the comedy business but doing this site makes them feel involved in some way.I see.Fair enough.
Urm, yes... clearly this is a no win situation for the corpses, as this is a case of people wanting to believe whatever they want.
Even if they weren't anonymous, most of the forum visitors wouldn't know who they are, so we'd get "they're unknown comedy writers" argument.
If it makes you feel safe and happy to believe that they're failed writers in someway, fine. You would be wrong though.
>Jim Davidson (living proof that the Luftwaffe didn't drop enough bombs on the east end).
Except....he's a South Londoner. (In case it matters.)

It can be a win situation Rob s.I have read the bulletin and now The Corpses have explained themselves more clearly, I see they are sincere in their motives. However,Im sure not all the writers and performers are as cynical about their careers as they might imagine,or maybe Im just naive!Love and kisses xxxxxx
So fans aren't allowed to think about the comedy they watch and make constructive critism then? Time for me to find another area of interest then.
