it's actually gone the other way. a friend of mine works on eastenders, and they've recently been issued a dictat from on high stating that 'this is a place of work, not a tourist attraction' etc and that even bringing your mates round on a quiet sunday afternoon is no longer on.

That's a pisser. I went there in January with a load of booksellers on a BBC Worldwide trip to drum up trade for an EastEnders tie-in book, and it was fascinating. The studios still have the permanent audience seating put in by ATV. I asked one of the EastEnders production team which studio they would have used for the Muppets, and she said that while she didn't know, Philip Casson (ex-ATV) still worked there and would know for sure. Had it not been his day off, she said, I could have asked him.
I went on that open day, it was fantastic.. funny how that little road that leads off from the car lot on albert square ends up going past grange hill school, and then though one of the doors in the playground it's the NSE newsroom!
The BBC should do more of that sort of thing, after all we own them and stuff..
