BBC Elstree Posted Fri Jun 2 18:26:16 BST 2000 by Paul

Back in about 1993/4 the BBC at Elstree actually held an 'Open Day' where you could wander around the studios, checking out the sets for 'EastEnders' and 'Top of the Pops' and others bits and pieces. Does anyone have any ideas if they have held one since (they also held one in 1988) or if they have any plans to have another Open Day in the future ? It was a brilliant day, marred only by the sheer number of people and the fact they strictly said "No video-taping" in the studios, but when I got up there they had relaxed this rule !

it's actually gone the other way. a friend of mine works on eastenders, and they've recently been issued a dictat from on high stating that 'this is a place of work, not a tourist attraction' etc and that even bringing your mates round on a quiet sunday afternoon is no longer on.

That's a pisser. I went there in January with a load of booksellers on a BBC Worldwide trip to drum up trade for an EastEnders tie-in book, and it was fascinating. The studios still have the permanent audience seating put in by ATV. I asked one of the EastEnders production team which studio they would have used for the Muppets, and she said that while she didn't know, Philip Casson (ex-ATV) still worked there and would know for sure. Had it not been his day off, she said, I could have asked him.

I went on that open day, it was fantastic.. funny how that little road that leads off from the car lot on albert square ends up going past grange hill school, and then though one of the doors in the playground it's the NSE newsroom!

The BBC should do more of that sort of thing, after all we own them and stuff..
