He ought to stick to the live stand-up and get rid of that shitty animated thing.
>He ought to stick to the live stand-up and get rid of that shitty animated thing.
Absolutely - his channel 4 show was the best TV show he did. That video hae had out a few years ago (palladium?) which was later broadcast by Channel 5 was very good as well.

You mean Hugh Dennis?
>You mean Hugh Dennis?
Is that who it is?
*showing my ignorance*
Who's Hugh Dennis anyway?
>You mean Hugh Dennis?
Any relation to the hysterically funny Les?
Half of Punt and...?
That's the one. Punt and Les Dennis.
Ah yes, Dennis was always the funny one.
Jed Cake, of course, is the name of Dennis's character. The show often reminds me of the sitcom ideas page in the fist of fun book where Jacks deadpan reaction to the various colourful characters results in humour.Hmmm.

Yes, it reminded me of that as well. At least someone at the BBC like Lee and Herring. But have they been paid, i wonder?
I was trying to imply that Hugh Dennis was badly animated, with hilarious results. But it didn't work.
Milky fucking milky.

Well, that was worth triple-posting.
Ahhhh, shut yet face. I didn't mean to.
*through a mouthful of duct tape*
I know. thorry.
>No wonder this is so bad - it's co-written by Rich Hall, that terrible terrible 'comic'.
WHAT????? Rich Hall is a genius! And one of the few real master-comedians around at the moment. He has natural comic timing and instinct. What planet are you on? Rich Hall is fantastic and possibly one of the most respected comics around.
Have you not heard of Otis Lee Crenshaw? One of the greatest comic creations of all time.

Greatest comics? Yeah right. I've seen his standup - limp, overused 'observations'. He's the kind of standup i place into the "rugs - what are they all about? like carpets that don't fit!!!" basket. Anyone who says "whats that all about then?" deserves to be shot.
I've felt very let-down by what little I've seen of Rich Hall, considering all the hype he's had (notably from fellow comedians, too). The bits of stand-up I've seen on TV didn't live up to the "brilliant, innovative" tag he's been given, that Otis character is just a lazy cliche... I saw him on "They Think It's All Over" and, for someone who has spent so much time in Britain over the years, he showed very little understanding of the national culture or humour. And he wasn't funny.
Perhaps he just doesn't come over well on TV. Has anyone actually seen him live?
Live he is in his element. He likes to get the atmosphere just right too. The Otis Lee Crenshaw character is part of a late-night brawl/caberet/mellow atmosphere. It isn't the character alone that works. Rich hated his last Edinburgh fringe venue because it wasn't a sleazy, boozy come and go as you please enclave which is crucial to the Crenshaw experience. It isn't just the opportunity to tell a few jail jokes. It is mood comedy and the absurdity of Crenshaw singing his blues of rape and his take on the world and finding a caberet catharsis for his angst is funny.
Ok I'm no reviewer, but if you were sat there amongst the smoke and gravelly drawl as he remarked on it being a 'fine line between comedy and a hostage situation' as he targets members of the audience, you would laugh.
A neon backdrop and sportsmen aren't really going to spur him to great heights as he probably doesn't even care about fitting in with the nations passion for 'soccer'. At least he doesn't lie by trying to coin some comedy stylings by learning how to pronounce 'middle wicket' in his brash accent.
On NMTB he was superbly funny and received a very warm reception. Rich Hall is Rich Hall and he doesn't stick to guidelines or show any fear at going with the flow and that is why people love him. OK you don't remember any of his one-liners but I'll bet you remember the smell and the mood of the comedy moment.
And he used to write a very funny column for The Scotsman (well, I liked it.)
