Top of the Pops Posted Fri May 26 17:41:04 BST 2000 by Paul

I suppose the BBC has to save money where it can, but I often wonder when the sets will change on TOTP ? The four main sets used are the same ones, re-dressed and only slightly changed, that were introduced in 1995 ! To me the show lost a lot of its appeal when it moved from TV Centre in Oct 1991 to Elstree. Ok, so obviously it only reflects what is in the charts, but the 'look' of the show is no longer very visual... as I say, the sets never seem to change...
Bring back all the 80's Neon look !!!!!!

I think that projection of Eric Bristow should come back as a permenant fixture!

By the way, if the set does change, it'll be a bit of an operation making sure the sets in the German and wherever else versions change to the same look at the same time too (they seamlessly add bits from the UK version when relevent to the local charts)

But yeah, it was better in TV Centre with the fairly massive sets, although the first attempt at Elstree was alright. Maybe it's just that Elstree's not a very nice place (oops, I shouldn't say that sort of thing, should I? Well I've never liked it anyway..)

Um, I'd better stop now before I start ranting about the serious lack of quality music television at the moment..

...yes, Elstree isn't the best venue is it ?? I've been there loads of times to TOTP etc.. and its definately no Television Centre ! The studios look like old warehouses ! I went to loads of TOTP in the eighties at TVC and it was much better - the sets more visual and better variety of presenters ! Of course, back in those days the audience appeared in just about every link, so I often had my few seconds of fame ! That format was actually dropped a few months before it left Television Centre in 1991. Shame !

They brought it back once when John Peel presented it again in the mid-ninties for his TIYL appearance.

The early eighties theme tune was based on 'Black Pearl' by Thin Lizzie. This track appears on Now Millenium series 1981. Still available in some shops.

Sorry to be picky Richard, but you mean "Yellow Pearl" by Phil Lynott ? Talking of TOTP themes, anyone know when the afore-mentioned theme changed to the Paul Hardcastle version ? I would guess at some point in 1985 ? I also belive that the BBC used a slightly different version of the Phil Lynott theme to co-incide with the slightly changed title sequence - you know the 'slit scan' "Dr Who" type vortex that the previous title sequence would be played on pictures of TV sets"

This is all from memory - the Paul Hardcastle theme and 'new look' was used from about March 1986. The revised opening titles were used from the 1000th edition in April 1983, but I'm sure the countdown music didn't change until late 1984.

...around March 1986 ? That late ? So, the old style 'round' logo was still used up until this time ? I thought it was 1985, but you are probably right.

Yeah, I do mean Yellow Pearl, but Phil Lynott was in Thin Lizzie, wasn't he?

Or am I mad? Can't remember what it is credited as on the CD.

It is THAT Phil Lynott - but it was co-written by Midge Ure.
