Kevin Smith Posted Wed May 24 12:28:27 BST 2000 by Jimbeam

I know he doesn't fall within your usual boundaries of discussion but I'd be really interested to hear any opinions on his work...

£2.00! Bargain. I really liked Mallrats even though I've heard he wasn't that happy with it. I've only recently got into them too, and feel like I'm in a kind of Honeymoon stage of thinking they're fantastic. A friend of mine bought the Clerks DVD recently and we had a look... it was OK but the deleted bits were like scenes from the film where they'd only cut the odd line, so it was obviously designed to mainly appeal to obssesive fans. Apart from the alternative ending of course, where Dante was originally shot which is quite a major alteration. At the moment I prefer Chasing Amy but maybe it's because I saw it first. I like the way it develops some of the themes of the earlier films though...
I never actually managed to see 'Spaced' when it was on, but I think there were a few Smith referrences in that. Any ideas???

Mr Jimbeam, have you looked at any of the Kevin Smith comics? Claire's got them if you want to take a look. She used to keep forcing me to watch Clerks and everytime she cornered me, the tape would always be in exactly the same place. So I know about 10 mins of it extremely well. The rest, however, is a mystery...
I generally liked Chasing Amy, though elements annoyed me - can't think what offhand, and I found Mallrats enjoyable and entertaining in most parts.
Perhaps I just need to pay them a little more attention to really appreciate their charms.

I've got all three Clerks comics that I know exist - are there more than three? And a few Jay & Silent Bob ones but they're not great. Any views on the comics??

Dante was shot!?
That would kind of ruin the "average day at work" theme of the film....
unless you were Apu from The Simpsons :-)
was he shot dead? anything else hapen in this alternate ending?

No that was it. I think what happened was Kevin Smith came in as an anonymous shopper, bought something, then left and this other guy came in, shot Dante, robbed the cash register then left. It ended with him dead on the floor. In the commentary of the DVD Smith said he was eternally grateful to whoever it was that made him change the ending! Useful, these DVDs....

Yeah, I'll have to get me a DVD player and join the 21st century..
Maybe Kevin was going for a "serious shock value point about fragility of life in gun toting usa". Really glad he didnt.

it is him who plays silent bob isnt it?
was the anonymous shopper a different character?
