To be honest, not a huge amount of competition here. Not counting Drop The Dead Donkey - topical quips shoehorned into slanging matches between one-dimensional meeja-types. But there was Nightingales (fantastic minimalist sitcom about nightwatchmen, featuring the marvellous David Thewlis), and Ted, obviously. Didn't see enough of Spaced to know one way or the other (hence my silence on all the Pegg-related threads).

Um...I've run out. Any others?

Nightingales was class, as was Ted, and whatever cock Pegg's been sucking, Spaced is great. But you're right- the only other one I can think of offhand is 'Groovy Fellers', that one with Jools Holland and a stark-bollock-naked Rowland Rivron.

Short thread this...

so embarrassing to admit, but i've got the first episode on video from years and fucking years ago. at the time, i lived in chelmsford - the most unspeakably drab place on the earth - and the local newspapers (photo of people holding giant cheque) went mad over it, and insisted on photographing jimmy mulville and rory mcgrath on some roundabout on the ring road.

stylish, eh?

wasn't this the first programme to be made by Hat Trick Productions? (early 1988). And before anyone says, no, Who Dares Wins was just made by Who Dares Wins Productions. (Although it was probably the same people involved, admittedly.)

I never saw it, but I heard that the first episode started with them talking in Latin. It was C4's stab at doing a 'Blackadder', wasn't it?

My Latin teacher at school had read a preview in the Independent which said, "anyone who writes jokes in Latin deserves a good audience" and encouraged us all to watch it. The first scene of part one, where Mulville's character offends the Emperor and is sent to the shittiest corner of the Empire (Chelmsford), is in Latin. We all committed the phrase "miser irrumator" to memory which, if the subtitles were to be believed, translates as "poor bastard". The first episode also contains a scene where, on his arrival in England in the pouring rain, Mulville's character fails to notice the TARDIS materialising behind him, a figure stepping out, swearing at the rain, then stepping back and dematerialising. That's all I really remember about it - it was just scatalogical tedium.

The last episode had a lot of Latin in it as well. I remember the first series being OK and the second being fantastic. C4 should repeat it.

never trust mothers. mine told me that i was the most beautiful son in the world, and i'm an ugly fuck. (no point lying.)

i remember 'testiculi' being translated as 'balderdash,' which i thought was weak and rubbish. that said, i still have the first episode on video. twerp.
