Footbal t'other night Posted Fri May 19 12:57:46 BST 2000 by Richard

The European football thingy that Arsenal lost on penalties was odd in that the BBC coverage had the Nissan logo at the end of the programme in a seperate bit after the main closing titles. If it had been on ITV I would have dismissed it as sponsorship, but for the BBC - well, this is the closest to sponsorship I've seen. Maybe they were obliged to show it. This might also explain why they didn't use the normal MOTD music or titles either.

For the Champions' League, all TV stations use the same titles and the same sponsorship (Amstel, Playstation (with that sodding great ball) and the like).

What's the point of sponsorship anyway? We already know these firms exist, and even if we didn't, then who cares how they chuck their money away? Why buy their products for that reason?

I'm quite sure the BBC had to show the Nissan credits at the end as part of thier broadcasting agreement with UEFA. I suppose its a bit like when they have to show the AXA FA Cup logo on caption during FA Cup highlights. The main beneficiary is the event organisers.

Yeah, just like the forthcoming (or has it started yet?) sponsorship of the charts on Top of the Pops. The Beeb won't get the money, it's just part of the agreement to show the charts. Am sure Teletext etc. will have to do the same on thier charts pages.

Yeah, on the Top 40 yesterday, Mr Goodybags said 'And now the complete rundown of the Top 40 compiled by the music industry and supported by Worldpop.com'
