Christie Malry's Own Double Entry Posted Thu May 11 12:19:38 BST 2000 by Jon

'Christie Malry's Own Double Entry' by B.S Johnson (1973) is the funniest book ever written, and it's getting made into a film at the moment. However, since most of the humour involves surreal/postmodern jokes about the fact it's a novel, and the characters know they are just characters in a novel, it should be unfilmable, unless either (a) they ditch all that stuff, producing a waste of time, or (b) they end up with some atrocious would-be "cult comedy". Mind you, it could be good.

I'm writing this ahead of the film coming out to urge you to read the book regardless of how the film gets reviewed. It's not currently in print in the UK but it should be re-issued anyway. Also, if anyone knows anything about the film, that would be great to know. there is a website, but it doesn't say much. I was surprised David Quantick isn't involved - I saw a feature by him somewhere acclaiming 'Christie Malry' as a masterpiece.
