Did anybody hear 'Pillories of the Community' on R4 last night? It was a roundtable discussion about the comedy industry, hosted by the ginger one from Struck Off & Die, featuring John Sessions, Barry Cryer, Caroline Raphael (R4 commissioning editor for comedy) and Richard Allen Turner from Avalon. If I hadn't been on a train, I would have taped it.

Turner was heard to moan about how it was a shame Radio 1 stopped doing comedy, because it has meant the death of shows like The Mary Whitehouse Experience. What a great opinion to have! Oddly, however, he didn't mention his role in blocking repeats/cassette releases of said show. His depressing philosophy seemed to be that a comedian's greatness can only be measured in terms of whether they succeed in getting from A to B; once they're at B, any interest in their archive material is an irrelevance.

He then went on to talk about how the Edinburgh Festival is 'run by the public, not by the industry' and that good shows become famous by word of mouth alone. I think Lee & Herring are writing his scripts.

Caroline Raphael is head of comedy now?! Good god, I thought she was still head of drama. Obviously, no comedy producer was considered good enough to do the job when it came down to it...
