I had no idea about this, but I must admit I've been curious ever since buying the first Not LP in 1980 when Langham's name is barely legible on the sleeve, while Griff Rhys Jones (who appears in about the same number of sketches) received equal credit with Stephenson, Atkinson and Smith.
I think People Like Us is one of the best comedy shows of recent times - Roy Mallard's a superb character, so understated and subtle. Kiss Me Kate was patchier but had its moments (usually involving Langham, frankly). It is about time he got recognised - I think he's a bit unsung. After all, what great comedy have the other NOt performers given us in the last decade? Exactly.
Didn't Langham also leave to write for The Muppet Show? Or did he do that before Not?
And he's in the wondrous Life Of Brian. Nuff said, obviously.
We got the first NOT series the other day, so expect a full dissection/screengrabs galore in SOTCAA very soon.
He was self-evidently fantastic, and clearly the best advertisement for drink and drugs we've ever seen.

Have a listen to his routine on the Secret Policeman's Second Ball album / video. His stand-up was really good - better than his sketch performances, to be honest, where he was always a bit wooden. Far as I know it was the substances that fucked him up for a while, although after all that was over he did turn up again a fair bit in Smith & Jones' later series. (He didn't actually get any amusing dialogue, though - with Griff's tight stranglehold on the material, no-one except him and Mel was allowed to say anything funny at all...)
Yes his Secret Policeman's Other Ball apearance was great. 'Look, I'm only prepared to take this seriously if you are...'
His NTNOCN appearances were better though. Especially 'Craftsman's Kitchen' and that thing about going to church ('In the lurch? Try the church. It's better than putting your head in a boiling chip pan...').
Chris Langham was on the The Muppet Show once, doing his owl impression. This involved him putting gloves on his feet, crouching down and pulling a large wooly jumper over his knees and making Ta-wit ta-woo noises.I think he did get involved with Henson for a while .My favourite Langham moment was the NTNON sketch set in a board meeting where the bosses are making offers of their wives recipes for ratouille and the use of the swivel chair to placate their employees. Its on the first LP if anybody bothers to play comedy records these days.
