(It’s comedy as far as we’re concerned...)

A rough cut of the film (then still called 'Spice: The Movie') was bootlegged a couple of months before its cinema release on 26/12/97. The finished cut featured several changes:

1. Gary Glitter originally made a cameo following the girls’ performance of ‘I’m The Leader Of The Gang (I Am)’. This, however, was hastily removed after Glitter’s arrest for possessing child pornography. ‘Innocent until proven guilty’ obviously didn’t apply, and the producers clearly believed Glitter’s presence to be inappropriate (i.e., a bad PR exercise) in a film aimed at children.

2. On a similar theme, the opening sequence featuring Elton John being smothered in kisses by the group originally had a punchline: ‘Damn!’ he exclaimed, after the girls left. ‘That never happened with Take That!’. A rubbish joke, agreed, but were there sinister reasons behind its absence in the final cut? Could it be that Sir Elton’s self-promoted position as a People’s Figurehead/Official Mourner following his ‘Candle In The Wind’ nonsense rendered flippant remarks about a fifty year old man being seduced by teenage boys equally ‘inappropriate’? Amusingly, the absence of this punchline renders Elton’s appearance in the film completely pointless.

3. In the scene where Kevin McMaxford (Barry Humphries) is told by his assistant editor (Jason Fleming) about all the scoops a paparazzi hack has obtained, the line ‘He got you the photos of the Tellytubbies taking a poo’ was overdubbed. The original line was ‘He got you the photos of Diana in the gym’. A close-up cutaway of Humphries’ face was used to disguise Fleming’s mouth movements. The bootleg featured this cutaway, with an instruction to the sound-mixer (‘Delete Sound’) superimposed on the screen.

4. A similar fate befell a reference to another saintly stiff. Look at the scene where Michael Barrymore’s drill sergeant bellows at the group and informs them that ‘I’m your mother now, and I don’t mean Superior!’. The original line was, of course, ‘I don’t mean Theresa’, and another actor was drafted in to overdub the piece. Again, a cutaway was used (this time a long shot), with the ‘Delete Sound’ request once again present on the bootleg.

[NOTE: The Spice Girls mentioned the re-editing in an interview, boasting that they made changes because they ‘care about their fans’. Yeah, like they’ve ever seen a VT-editing suite in their lives...]
