1. The first show of Series 1 (recorded on 24/9/98 for transmission two days later) began with Punt and Dennis discussing listening figures, followed - after a sting - by a sequence about the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal. However, Punt’s opening line to this latter section started very abruptly, with the wearisome line ‘Alright then...Bill Clinton’. This was due to the problems of recording in a student venue - namely, the ULU Theatre at the University of London. Punt and Dennis had started their Bill Clinton routine, only for a gormless teenager to emerge from a side-door and slam it loudly behind him. The audience were amused and applauded. ‘What’s the phrase again?’ pondered Punt. ‘Oh yes, that’s it - ‘fucking students’.’ Dennis was also dismayed, suggesting that the student was ‘doing a PhD in door-closing’. Sadly, producer Aled Evans did not leave this incident in the edit. (Armando Iannucci would have done...)
