The Fast Show

Sketch show, 1994-97, most of which presumably goes over the kids' heads. Ironically, the best sketches tend to be the one-offs (or the original in an unintentional running item). Ironic still, the most recurrent creations (Ron Manager, Suit You, Bob Fleming) are also the worst.

1. The opening show of the second series (16/2/96) featured a spoof of Nick Park, with an animator (Charlie Higson) showing off some Wallace and Grommet-esque plasticine figures to an interviewer (Paul Whitehouse). Attempting to explain the animation process, the artist moves the figures very slightly before capturing them on his camera; he does this several times, seemingly unaware that he his boring the interviewer. When the repetition of the action became almost excruciating, Whitehouse turned and whispered the punchline: 'Anyone fancy a pint?'. However, as Whitehouse walks off, he mutters 'I mean, for fuck's sake...'. The laugh after this suggests that the profanity was audible to the audience, but it was mixed off both for transmission and for the 1997 video release.

2. Paul Whitehouse's 'Unlucky Alf' character was used in an advert for the BBC licence fee in 1999. The advert ended with a crash of lightning sending a television cable crashing through his window and Alf uttering his catchphrase 'Ah, bugger'. However, another piece of storm FX was washed over the expletive itself, thus denting its impact.

[NOTE: Ceefax 888 subtitles however kept the phrase intact for the benefit of the deaf of hard of hearing (info supplied by Mike Pitt. Thanks Mike).]
