COPYING BITS
FROM... Half the existence of Toothpick Companion is due to the dearth of written information elsewhere. The beginnings of this guide, back in 1995, were based on the Internet-based scholarships of Matthew K.Sharp (see web links) and Daniel Bowen. Added to that was the first edition of Martin Day/Keith Topping/Paul Cornell’s The Guiness Book of Classic British Televison (Guiness 1993) which offered yet another set of episode titles and a pretty neat essay. The only other material was a feature in the defunct Deadpan magazine at the time of video releases in 1994, plus a threadbare copy of Roger Wilmut’s From Fringe To Flying Circus (Methuen 1980). In 2000 the world is a happier place - we have better technology, bigger bellies and the monthly newsletter The Clarion and Globe. This closely follows the current activities of Tim, Bill and Graeme along with extracts from Brett Alender’s The Goodies Programme Summaries and useful features by Andrew Pixley amongst others. Subscription details are available at the Goodies Rule O.K. website (see links). Meanwhile, somewhere in the dank, seedy netherworld of cut-throat book publishing lies Robert Ross’ The Complete Goodies (Batsford 2000). If you write nice letters you can also get episode listings and archive holdings from the British Film Institute and BBC Film & Television Archive. Actually you could get those in 1995 but the paper they’re using now is just great. READING PAGES
LIKE The Cricklewood Office <http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/4705/cricklewood.html> - home to Matthew K. Sharp’s thorough episode guide, but the site as a whole rarely changes. Melinda Casino runs the whole shebang and is worth a look. The Goodies - Censored! <http://home.mira.net/~kirseval/gdyscut.htm> - Matthew K. Sharp documents every Aussie cut to the series in characteristic detail. No idea why it’s green though. Earthanasia! <http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/9681> - a website devoted to the ‘Earthanasia’ episode, including a full transcript and various downloads. Apparently there are formative plans to expand onto ‘Pirate Radio’. Grayden Hanson is doing a good job so far. Goody, Goody, Yum, Yum <http://www.humorlinks.com> - Keith Topping’s extension of an article for The Guiness Book Of Classic British Television. Beebfun <http://www.beebfun.com/goodies-htm> - home to Goodies screen-savers and downloadable icons should you ever want them. THANKS
